I guess the lights were on and nobody was home there then  Grin
- LAMP, ah yes I see:

This is a B50 pSeries server (was an S70), running my specially hardened AIX with PHP, MySQL & Apache all specially compiled by Michael.  The L in my recently revised logo (did anybody notice) is the closest I get to Linux if I can help it  Shocked

Joomla was something Michael wanted to learn more about - I confess I know nothing about it, nor do I particularly wish to, I just want to use it - however,  experienced developer input should always be welcome.

Both Michael and I are always open to PMs of course - and Michael will be understanding your suggestions.

To your to do list, the on-going area of concern I would add relates to the efforts of some apparently Russian porn merchants who intermittently plague the Linux area of the forum - apologies all for Monday's not so large server posting by the way - we had to remove the ability to post graphics for regular members just when it might have been getting interesting  Undecided

Thanks for the reply.

Lamp = Linux, Apache, MySQL, PHP

If you are use Joomla you have to be using Apache, MySQL, and PHP.
So, I guess my question is are you running Joomla on LINUX or AIX?

I have several recommendations regarding the use of your site.  Some may be a direction you want to go while other you may not.

This first thing I would do is fix the Google AdSense Module.  At a minimum I would unpublish in the joomla administrator the AdSense module from the forum section or change the template to accommodate the width. I see you are using Rockettheme templates.  I am a member of rockettheme too.  Maybe we will run across you there.

Then I would install the community builder component and integrate it into other components (maybe even the forum).  This will create a single user signon for the website and Forum.

I have built several community websites and am willing to provide help to any degree you desire.

I do not want to post my phone number in the forum, but if you want advice on the website send me a PM or email and I will give you my phone number to call.

Phil,

Yes rootvg.net has been around in one form or other for seven years now:
http://rootvg.net/content/view/102/98/ (http://rootvg.net/content/view/102/98/)

The current format is Michael's work, as well as being the number one author here.  I moderate, post and have paid the bills since 2004.  Before that, our founding father Erik was responsible for what is now the archive site and original forum formats, all of which is still maintained as a well used reference.

Technology is always moving on, but the focus here is to support things related to AIX and Linux for the IBM platforms, with the independent slant.  We're hoping not to have to keep changing the software that delivers this.  I don't think Lamp is involved by the way.

We would welcome any specific suggestions as to how the current format might be improved, particularly if you can assist with improvements for us.

Most importantly though, we will always need more content contributions, for the benefit of all.

As you can see from the extremetracking stats (that globe icon below), we work in a niche technical area, coming up on 2000 members for the new forum soon, and a few more daily readers of the site.

Once we get to know members, we're open to having perhaps more moderators and even developers.

This is my first post to the forum.  I have been referencing rootvg.net for several years (is that possible?).

I am happy to see you switch over to joomla.  This is a powerful CMS and a pleasure to work on.

Nice website.  You have chosen popular forum software for websites.
Joomla uses the JoomlaHacks Joomla-SMF Forum(JSMF) Bridge into Simple Machines Forum(SMF).

I like to use Fireboard which is free to use and was not available at the time you created this website.  Fireboard is a native forum to Joomla.

SMF ICONs are much nicer and SMF may be better suited for high volume forums.
There are several plugins you could use with JSMF.

By the way, is rootvg.net using lamp?

Actually, I am grateful for your comments. Only way to improve "ease of use" is to hear about the difficulties.

It is a setting in your profile that you can change if you prefer oldest first.

Thanks for the comment. If people don't like this approach, I'll find a way to change the default.

Yes, that is one of the ideas. Still have to decide whether to name it HOWTO, or FAQ. Probably HOWTO as FAQ is more generally site related, versus HOWTOs which are skill based.

Thanks for mentioning it!

The site looks good. I imagine the biggest piece of work will be organizing and validating the links section.

One thing that I've noticed is that the same problems keep getting posted on the forum (like how to setup/change paging space). Perhaps a section on solutions to common problems would be good. Just my 2 cents worth.

Much of that will be what joomla calls "wrapable."

And I am hoping people will comment on what cant be missed in the new site.

A feature I am hoping people will look at is: Submit WebLink (http://felt-1.demon.nl/jootvg/index.php?option=com_weblinks&task=new&Itemid=14).

And be sure to point out missing categories.

Looks good!!

Actualy, if you move the whole "old" rootvg site to a new look, I do hope you keep the nice linklist as it is on the old site. It was always helpful to point people with AIX-Probs there, since all the stuff was easily reachable..

Especially nice are the quickref things as well as the documentation block on the old site.

Wish you good luck with the "new" look, up to now, I think it works just fine!

The more alternatives, the more difficult the choice.

Good luck with the renewed rootvg.

I have been looking for a new system for running the forums and hope that "SimpleMachines" is going to be a good choice for several years.

Regards,
