I think that it would be great that sites like opensource or similar provide these packages, it would be great that IBM could have them too.

Quite right John - is there a need we can fill, as in people are not happy with the way things are packaged and/or time between updates that maybe we could do different.

No need is exactly that - no need.

Further, thsi poll is also for my curiosity - how many rootvg readers actually use opensource on AIX.

Any additional feedback anyone feels like giving on the subject - e.g. why you do, or do not use opensource on AIX is welcome.

Just so you know, I've voted for rootvg as the way ahead.

Although I was perfectly happy to use the Bull site, I think
it is important for open source credibility to be available from
a trusted independent vehicle - seen to be not controlled
by any manufacurer, etc.

While rootvg as it stands may not be perfect for this,
I believe it is the most widely known independent site for AIX,
and has been so for many years now.

Obviously anything that might replace the Bull outlet as the place to go,
would need new developments with appropriate infrastructure to deliver it.
Unlike most PC hosted sites we have some serious servers and
practice what we preach.  But any further development could be another
order of magnitude on this, and there's a question there then as to
how that would be funded (I am not a bottomless pit,
despite some rumours to the contrary;-)

So for the time being then, we are voting here on the principle
of where we would like the open source stuff to be available
from, regardless of what that then might entail logistically.

I am thinking about doing a lot more with opensource pre-packaging for AIX. But before I do I need some indication of whether this is only a Linux thing, or if there is a need - and "market" for AIX pre-packaged/pre-built open source software. And I need to know if rootvg is trusted enough to be a primary source.

Thank you for your time - and effort (might need to register) on this poll!

p.s. You may change your vote on this poll.

p.p.s. I am voting for the portal page - because I'll be building. Otherwise I'd go rootvg of course  Wink
