Well, as you say you have AIX 5.2 installed, the system should run AIX 5.3. Unless there is something surprising I know nothing about.

afaik: rspc and mc(?) (microchannel) based systems stopped being 'installable' with AIX 5.1, but all chrp (common hardware platform) systems were supported for AIX 5.2 and 5.3. Since you say you have AIX 5.2 installed, I further assume the 44P-170 is a chrp system.

alt disk install does not require a bootable CD - because it does not reboot to do the install. You install while the old system is up and running. Often alt_disk_install is used for a migration install, but a fresh install is also doable.

I have also tried an AIX53 - ML01  CD.  This was burnt from an ISO image using Nero.  I get the same problem. 

Doesn't the alt_disk_install also require a bootable disk?

As it is working as a 5.2 system you do not need to reformat the disk. It was on the off chance you had just gotten the system and the contents of the disk is an unknown.

If you have a seconds disk (spare) you could try the alt_disk_install method.

If you have an IBM support contract I would order the 5.3 TL 07 CD's. My guess right now is that you have a bad cd.

Michael,

Thanks for your help and suggestions.  I will check the CD numbers on Tuesday.

I have also been thinking of finding an AIX 5.2 CD to try and boot from.

I had used the SMS method you suggested and it did display AIX 5.3 as the install media.  I will do it again and take note of the sequence it goes through.

Why would format/certify the hard disk help.  I don't really want to go down this route as I have a working AIX 5.2 system installed.

Oh yes, what is the CD number. TL6 CD's are from last June. I'll see if I still have one so we can compare numbers.

OK. Sounds like there should not be a problem with your hardware - as it will boot from one CDROM, but have you verified that your cdrom (not cd drive) is okay.

It has been a very long time since I have installed a 43P/44P system from a CD. If you start in the SMS menu (press 1 as the system starts to enter SMS menu, not 5 or 6 to start default/service boots) and press the option to choose the install media, it should say AIX 5.3 at some time - before you boot. From that menu try to start the boot process and pay attention to the LED/LCD codes as the system starts. And give me an update if it continues to be a struggle.

p.s. have you got an older version of AIX to try? Not to install but just to test that your system will boot.

p.p.s. consider using the diag disk to format/certify the harddisk as well.

I have 2GB of RAM and I am able to boot off a 5.3 Diagnostic CD.  So, I know it is booting off the CD drive.

I have also tried another 5.3 CD with the same problem.

  • How much RAM do you have? AIX 5.3 requires at least 256M to install.
  • And maybe your cdrom is bad. Have you tried using it to boot on a different system?

    • And yes, the Model 44p supports AIX 5.3 and previous versions. It does not support AIX 6.1

    As they say on Coronation Street, "well, I don't really know Vera".

    Try pulling the system battery for 30 minutes to drop the VRAM boot list etc
    before giving the CD boot another try.

    My understanding is that all 44p models support AIX5.3.  In fact the latest Firmware I applied from the IBM website for this model indicates that it provides support for AIX5.3.

    I have seen comments on other forums relating to people running AIX 5.3 on a 44p.

    I have a feeling that model is not supported with 5.3.
    The 43P-150 is for sure, and I thought the only one of that type that was.
    For a small system to run 5.3 and beyond you need a p505 - lovely little thing.

    I am having a probem booting my 7044-170 from the AIX53-TL6-SP1 CD. 

    It starts to boot from the CD.
    The "starting software" displays and shows the correct CD device as the boot image, but then eventually hangs.  The front panel displays

    0518 unknown boot fs.

    I have upgraded the firmware to the latest SPH05195.
