ioslevel is the command to verify the level of the VIO server. oslevel -s tells the level of AIX it is running on.

iirc it runs vios 1.5[.1] - how can I check that? 5300-08-01-0819 says oslevel

but the good news is: i got a mail from a debian developer and the most recent version of the next upcoming official release seems to run fine. that is: it installs fine - logging in gives some problems though

i did not have any problems with installing redhat/suse apart from the broken terminal emulation of the hmc console

Which version of VIOS (Virtual I/O Server) are you using?

Have you tried a network install? When I first started with Suse and Redhat - and was using IVM 1.3 I had all kinds of problems with CD/DVD installs. VIOS 1.4 provided a CD drive that was stable for installs where the physical DVD drive was made available via Virtual SCSI.

Hi,

I tried installing Debian Linux for power in an LPAR. Allocated 1 cpu, 4GB ram, 32GB diskspace via virtual scsi and then tried installing from the debian 4.0r4a iso-file in the vios.
In some cases it reaches the point where it starts installing packages but then fails after a few but most of the times it bails out with the error that it cannot use this cd player.
What should I do?
Installing from a physical cd works (somewhat but that's a different story) but that's a bit of a pain when you have lots of cds to install (my p52a is not under my desk).
