Title: Creating LPAR. on AIX 5.3 Type:9131--52A P520q server.
Post by: rajibd on December 21, 2007, 02:23:21 AM
Hi,
I have a p520q server with aix5.3.

Here is the questions:

1. How to configure the HMC ports. ( I can see there is two port on the back side of the server, written HMC1 and HMC2 )
Also there is 2 dual port lan card, and 3 dual port Fiber card.
2. How do I partition this server, and to create 2 LPAR on it.
And how to load OS on this lpar separately,
I know in hp-ux with parmgr. But not sure how to proceed with LPAR on aix .

Thanks in advance,

Hi!
What is your hmc version?

Connect hmc to HMC1 port. And set "management (public) network" where your hmc can communicate with lpars.

1. step connect HMC1 to hmc. Boot up 520 and setup it in hmc.
2. If you can see 520 on hmc, you can create (maybe) two lpar whith "don`t use all hardware" options.
If your machine have two processor: add one processor to first lpar, and add memory to this lpar, what do you know, and add pci devices as "required" to lpar. For example add one lan card, and one dual port Fiber card.

Try it this things, and if you don`t understand something answer it!
Good days :)

I forget it:
How many scsi disk, and scsi slot(? I don't know what is the correct name.)  have in 520?

(Sorry for my bad english but somebody translate to hungarian hmc console... and any drive etc. name in hungarian. Idiots... /I don't want to change LANG environment variable./)

Let's assume you have a stand-alone system, i.e. no HMC.

1) Install VIOS and let the system boot
2) login as padmin, set password and accept license
3) setup tcpip:
 a) $ oem_setup_env
 b) # smitty mktcpip

4) you will now have IVM - Integrated Virtualization Manager active
5) using https://hostname login to IVM to create partitions

Once you have created a partition you can set the cd drive to the partition (called optical device) and do a standard install. To get to the virtual terminal either be logged in as padmin on VIO server and use the command
$ mkvt -id #

where # is the numerical partition id, or if using VIOS 1.5.X you can use an new  command to open a virtual console from the web interface.

I hope this gives you enough to get started. Just ask away. Somebody will reply.

Thanks expets, here is few question again raised to my mind, from you guys answer:

Toth,
* What is your hmc version?   :  How do I know these, any command do I need to type on the OS.
* step connect HMC1 to hmc. Boot up 520 and setup it in hmc. ???  : What is HMC , how I can connect it to HMC1 port. I can see there is two HMC prot on the rear of the server  HMC1 and HMC2 ( Ethernet RJ45 type) .  I connected a laptop with 192.168.2.x series and got fsp> prompt after telnet . Dont know what to do with that.

Michael,
* What is VIOS , how I can install that. Already in the p520q server OS (aix 5.3) is installed.
* where I can login as padmin ?  there is no such user:  # cat /etc/passwd | grep padmin
* Also what is this : oem_setup_env    ,
aix001:>oem_setup_env
ksh: oem_setup_env:  not found.

Thanks agian,

The answers:
If you have installed hmc on machine. log in to this machine, and use lshmc -V command.
HMC==Hardware Management Console: this is a sofware what You can download from here (http://www14.software.ibm.com/webapp/set2/sas/f/hmc/home.html) This is a special linux, with secial functions. ;;
connect == connect normal utp cable between from HMC (pc where running HMC) ethernet card to 520s HMC1 port.
You can`t use with telnet HMC1 port.
VIOS is Virtual IO szerver: If you create one lpar where you add all device from 520, and install VIO server to this lpar,  you can share devices (ethernet/fc/hdisk...) with another new lpars.
If you install VIO the admin user name: padmin. If log in VIO You need use special commands, and "oem_setup_env" command for root admininistration commands.

Please send you 520 machine full device list!!!
VIO is lpar own devices...

Here is what I got,

aixst01:/>uname -a
AIX aixst01 3 5 0070FEHAD100
aixst01:/>lshmc -V
ksh: lshmc:  not found.

Where is lshmc ?, how to find it, How to proceed with creating LPAR,
P520q has 4 CPU, 160GB RAM, 2 * Dual port Enet Card, 3* Dual port FC, and 2 HDD.
( In rear side : 2 RJ45 type port listed as : HMC1 and HMC2.   also 2 more Ethernet port labeled as T5 and T6 dont know what is these,  and rest are ports from PCI cards as mentioend above.)
Thanks again,

The HMC is a series X system running the HMC code. This command lshmc is on that system.

On your AIX system do you have the following software - maybe at a different level?

# lslpp -L | grep ios
  devices.pci.00100100.com  5.3.0.10    C     F    Common Symbios PCI SCSI I/O
  ios.cli.man.en_US         5.3.0.51    C     F    Virtual I/O Technologies Man
  ios.cli.man.fr_FR          5.3.0.0    C     F    Virtual I/O Technologies Man
  ios.cli.man.ja_JP         5.3.0.51    C     F    Virtual I/O Technologies Man
  ios.cli.rte               1.1.0.56    C     F    Virtual I/O Technologies
  ios.ldw.gui                1.1.0.0    C     F    LPAR Deployment Wizard
  ios.ldw.rte               1.1.0.50    C     F    LPAR Deployment Wizard Runtime
  ios.lparmgr.cli.rte       1.1.0.50    C     F    Integrated Virtualization

Hi Rajibd!
On AIX if we ask from what is your OS version, better if you send me the "oslevel -s" output from aix machine.
Thanks!

Toth,
Here it is :
$ oslevel -s
5300-07-01-0748

Btw, we havn't purchased any HMC box from IBM with the server, and want to have two partition. [ We dont care if it is an npar or vpar , but want two partition]

Many Thanks,
Raj.

Hi!
If you don't have HMC I don't know how you can manage your lpars hardwares, and how can you up and down one lpar independent from other lpar if unix don't answer your requests. If you don't have hmc how you can open console to lpars?
How many aix servers do you have? If more then one you need install HMC? If you have one HMC you can manage all servers with it (connect all servers HMC1 ports to switch, and connect switch to HMC ethernet card).

If you dont have an HMC you must have least purchased the APV (Advanced Power Virtualization) feature. This features enables micropartitioning (allocation of fractions of processors rather than only full processors), Virtual IO Server software including Virtual SCSI and Shared Ethernet Adapter, and LPM (Logical Partition Manager) software.

Very few people/organizations use LPM these days. But it is included.

Without an HMC you install the VIO software and boot the system. Once an IP address has been assigned to the VIOS you can use the IVM (Integrated Virtualization Manager).

Getting it activated? I have a short videa demo entitled POWER5 IVM: Activation thru License Acceptance (http://rootvg.net/content/view/66/93/) that might help. Also try the vgGuide menu tab above for a broader selection. All the demos can be found there.

Thanks all for your valuable input, Thanks Michael for the Integrated Virtual Manager video.
Well as we have no HMC , IBM suggested us to purchase HMC to partition it, as our requirement is smal so decided to use it with a single partition only. AIX 5.3 ML7 configured and working fne. Thanks .

Well, if you have purchased the APV feature - Advanced Power Virtualization, you should have the VIO server software as well (already!!!) - and that is all you need to partition your system. VIOS doubles as IVM when there is no HMC.

But reading my previous posts - I guess I mentioned that already :P
