Title: [AIX 5.3] P520 Upgrade gives Paging Faults? Post by: Maarten Visser on August 12, 2008, 08:11:46 AM I upgraded 2 of our Production Machines from AIX 5.2 to AIX 5.3 (numerous of reasons it just had to go after 1,5 year).
It isn't really a verry big deal but it get's my attention now that i get a lot of Paging Faults at "topas" and vmstat. I just want to know if my values are a reason to concern or that it's normal behaviour. For explanation: System Model: IBM,9111-520 Processor Type: PowerPC_POWER5 Number Of Processors: 2 Processor Clock Speed: 1499 MHz CPU Type: 64-bit Kernel Type: 64-bit Memory Size: 15808 MB Good Memory Size: 15808 MB Platform Firmware level: SF240_338 Running Oracle 9.2.0.7 with 15 Databases. vmstat output: kthr memory page faults cpu ----- ----------- ------------------------ ------------ ----------- r b avm fre re pi po fr sr cy in sy cs us sy id wa 0 0 1960455 135771 0 0 0 0 0 0 359 5165 1674 3 8 88 1 1 0 1960455 135771 0 0 0 0 0 0 1573 20354 5944 16 35 48 0 1 0 1960455 135771 0 0 0 0 0 0 384 6090 1867 10 10 80 1 0 0 1960451 135775 0 0 0 0 0 0 624 9166 2713 4 15 79 2 1 0 1960455 135771 0 0 0 0 0 0 984 14998 4375 8 22 68 1 0 0 1960458 135768 0 0 0 0 0 0 83 1156 620 1 1 98 0 1 0 1960455 135771 0 0 0 0 0 0 167 2082 940 11 2 84 3 Topas: Paging: Faults 8466 .. ... Post by: Michael on August 15, 2008, 12:15:03 PM A page fault is not an error. Page fault is the term used to indicate that a page was desired that was not in memory. AIX 5.3 uses a bit more memory, and 64bit mode uses more memory still. Not a lot, but it might change your statistics a bit.
However, based on the amount of free memory, I suspect it is just your application's loading memory overtime. |
