Well, what is the actual problem? Getting the files to somewhere else to a filesystem anywhere? Or getting them from a filesystem to an iso image? Or burning the image?

Maybe the hardest part is getting the file from TSM. I am making an assumption that sysback makes it file in the bff (backup file format). On that assumption I would begin by just getting that file onto a system somewhere and unpacking it.

Once I have that done there are options to mkcd to make an iso image of a directory tree (dont know the arguments without looking them up, so I leave that part to you.) The output does not end with .iso so you need to rename the file, transfer to a PC with a good burner and burning program and you have your cd or dvd with the file information.

Now, the bootable CD part: same as above, largely, but it will help immensely to have a second system at the same level of AIX that you are restoring. It maybe that you can just give the sysback "mksysb" image as an argument to mkcd. mkcd will unpack the file, make a "bootblock", unpack the "mksysb" image, and combine that into a bootable image, or set of iso images (use argument -S to store all the images, -L creates DVD size images).

One suggestion: with an operating AIX system just use mkcd to make a bootable set of disks, perhaps from a mksysb file you make yourselves first. You dont have to burn any of them, just experience how it all works.

Hope this helps you on your way!

Okay,

I have a GREAT brain-teaser.....

Yesterday, we lost one of our servers, and we have been able to get it back to a state where it is asking for the bootable CD.

What we want to do is - place the Sysback images from our TSM server, onto a bootable CD, boot from that, then try and re-populate the filesystems from the images on the CD(if possible).

I cannot find ANY documentation on how to get the images from the TSM server, and burn them to a bootable CD.

Does anyone have ANY idea how to get this done - we are in a REAL pickle here !!!!!
