I once had this, gave me the creeps, not sure if this is the same situation, though.

After almost a week of research and countless maintenance boots I realised the upgrade had left an erroneous "root" entry in /etc/security/limits. The fsize parameter was set to 0 instead of -1 as a result of which no processes run by root could write to any of the disks.

The system had been perfectly operation before the upgrade, so it must have been the upgrade that made the wrong entry in "limits".

It may not be the same case you're facing now, but I thought it was interesting enough to share it with you... Just in case.

Check whether there is still an entry in /etc/inittab trying to start the configuration wizard - for license acceptance, etc..

In particular, you may need to accept a license before you are allowed to do anything on the system.

Also, if you have ever used a graphic card verify that the console is not (also) trying to communicate with the lft0. By default the configuration wizard likes to start itself on a graphic card. If you have never used a graphic adapter in the partition, this should not be an issue.

This, the wizard starting "elsewhere", is something I have seen before when doing migration installations.

Is it only the console? Or does login via any interface fail? And which level of AIX 5.3 did you migrate to?

I've an LPAR set up on a P690. The LPAR ran AIX v5.2. I then did an upgrade (using the migration option) to AIX v5.3. I've now encountered the problem that, at the console, I cannot log in as root (or as anyone else that matter). I get the login prompt, enter "root " and then the shell returns to the login prompt.

I get the same result if I enter any other defined user name. If I enter a non-existing name, then the shel prompts for a password and then returns the unkown user/password error.

I've tried going via maintenance mode and using the "passwd" command to reset root's password but this did not work.

Any suggestions?
