TLA-itis there from IBM on that topic clearly.

My annoyance with this issue is that I don't care about those details -
just like say I don't care for a push-button handbrake as has ruined the new VW Passat, I want a handbrake I know how to use as from the year dot - a serial port, however it's managed/operating, is not rocket science or an HDMI high data rate cable, it should be labelled "S1" and run at 9600 BAUD !,
but no instead we have now have a rash of completely pointless and irritating 19200 BAUD with a severe case of acronytis.

I've got a history with this one... The new machines stopped coming with printed user manuals explaining the basics, the first ones I saw with the new vty0 "S1" I'm referring to, I could not immediately connect to with my laptop hyperterm.  I asked the IBM rep could these then new p55A and p505 boxes work with a traditional serial cable - "NO" I was told repeatedly.  In the end I worked it out myself that all you needed to do was enable the virtual TTY and use the new BAUD.  And then the rep said "oh I told you, you could do that" - which she most definitely didn't !

Reliabilty, resilience and ultimately then performance, as in being able to do anything, relies on stuff like this.  Making things simple, obvious and intuitive - not doing stupid and pointless things that are the opposite  Angry
Rant over.  OK I can guess what you're going to say, it's because of the HMC and the "need" for a higher rate - guess what, not a fan of the whole HMC thing either  Tongue

Acrually, that is the physical serial port - when the managed system is powered off (enters the ASMI interface) and/or regardless of whether you are using an HMC or not.

When not using an HMC the serial port 0 is tty0 for the system or the VIOS partition otherwise known as IVM - Integrated Virtual Manager.

If you are using an HMC - as most do - once powered on the physical serial port is disabled - and all console activity is virtual via HMC and Hypervisor.

As annoying and pointless as the change is after over a decade of 9600 BAUD default on serial ports, you should note that now on the latest HMC capable systems, using the virtual serial port as a console,
it's 19200 BAUD these days !

yes, i have used hypertem and serial cables - and even USB serial cables.

Make sure you have the speed setup correctly - although considering that you are seeing the correct characters - that should be fine.

9600, N,8,1 (9600 baud, No parity, 8 bits, 1 stopbit)

This is the wiring required for DB9-DB9 ASCII console cables:

Carrier Detect           1  -+-------  4    Data Terminal Ready (DTR)
Data Set Ready           6  /
                                    /  1    Carrier Detect (CD)
Data Terminal Ready      4  -------+-  6    Data Set Ready (DSR)

Receive Data             2  ---------  3    Transmit Data (TxD)
Transmit Data            3  ---------  2    Receive Data (RxD)

Ready To Send            7  ---------- 8    Clear To Send (CTS)
Clear To Send            8  ---------- 7    Ready To Send (RTS)

Ring Indicator           9  ---------- 9    Ring Indicator (RI)

Signal Ground            5  ---------- 5    Signal Ground

Sheild Ground        Shell  ---------- Shell

So basically a crossed cable, but with the looped links at each end from pin 1 to pin 6.

If those loops are not in place, the effect is that you can see the boot process screens but do not get a login prompt.

Hi, I will check the serial cable, maybe it's not have the correct pin .
Where does I have got the correct information to make a serial cable for my server?
And will check the command ctrl+c to see that it works.
Could be possible that try to connect with the hiperterminal of windows?
I need  remove all the possibles posibilities to solve this issue.
Thank you.. I will try to do this steps.

when you see the words:
memory keyboard network scsi speaker

Before the word speaker appears try pressing on ascii ´1´ two or three times. This should bring you into the SMS menu where you can choose the boot device.

If you use '5' or '6' the system tries to boot automatically. With '5' using a default bootlist, and with '6' using the service bootlist.

Only using '1' will you get the SMS menu.

Depending on your firmware level you can also try Ctrl-C when the system initially starts to boot. If your firmware is new enough (I dont know for sure if this is for all systems, or when it was initially supported) and the boot process is still loading - it will break off the boot, and go back to the RS/6000 RS/6000 .... screen.

Hello I am newbie user and have got a Server (RS / 6000 H70). The vendor don't gave me the root password and the ip number, I can't enter en service mode. I pressed the button 5,1,6 in the terminal ASCII, but it does't responded. I use minicom with the specification on the manual documentation of the server. And if I try to wait the screen still here ------>
