About Debian on power.
When I follow the link I see several DVD images I need to download. Do you know if it is possible to do an install using only the first DVD image - for testing purposes? I am not so worried at this moment about being in 32 or 64 bit mode. That is just icing on the cake. First I need to taste the cake.
You don't need to download a whole DVD. It is sufficient to only download e.g.
http://cdimage.debian.org/debian-cd/4.0_r4a/powerpc/iso-cd/debian-40r4a-powerpc-businesscard.iso (http://cdimage.debian.org/debian-cd/4.0_r4a/powerpc/iso-cd/debian-40r4a-powerpc-businesscard.iso)
and then install it.
Please note that with this version there are a couple of problems:
1. virtual optical drive install won't work
2. no tty on your virtual console (in HMC)
Solution: install a more current version of Debian. The current version of testing works mostly fine (version 8 september 2008) altough the virtual console still has an issue.

One note: you should make sure that the 'openssh-server' package is installed too. This because the earlier mentioned console issue: it has two getty processes listening on it so that logging in (and entering commands) is a bit of an issue. Logging in via ssh works fine.
