brent,

Welcome to rootvg.net.

To answer your question briefly, yes.

With all the files in one directory:

inutoc . # create a table of contents
smitty update_all # start smit at update software screen
# at first panel say . - current directory as software source
# at next panel - say preview (if you like) AND
# accept all licenses (or it will fail durig the real install)
Press enter twice to see results

Note that on an update all you will often get a FAILED message as final result, when in fact all has gone well. The failed message is because on the first pass one fileset had to be installed first (generally bos.inst.rte to update the package database) and then on a second pass install the rest of the files.

Also note that you can choose to only APPLY the updates. This means that of the updates do more damage than good, you can rollback (recover in AIX talk) to what you had before (note, there are some exceptions I wont go into here). If you are happy with the fixes, you can COMMIT, and the saved versions of the old software are deleted.

Hope this helps.

Hello all. I am coming from a Gentoo Linux perspective as I write this so bear with me! (PS - I love AIX!)

I have recently enlisted SUMA to assist in updating my system. I got a particular APAR and it downloaded all the pre-reqs as well which of course is desirable. When applying these updates, will AIX/installp install these files in the necessary order or do I need to be specific? If you ever worked with Gentoo/BSD you are aware of Ports/Portage, a pkg mgt system that deals with all this for you (and is NOT rpm based !!!

Any help would be appreciated!
